Maria Elena

Like everything and everyone else in the story, we see Maria Elena through the eyes of Luther or Georgie.

From Georgie’s perspective, Maria Elena is Josefina’s mom and a most excellent cook. She is keeper of the greenhouse and plant life at Andersen Light: A Mystic Creek Novel, and works with Luther and their other coworker, Carl Nelson.

Later, Georgie learns that Maria Elena is a teacher and lover of plants, including their spirits. Her interest in the natural world is inherited, passed down through the generations, including from her great-grandmother, Florencia. One of Maria Elena’s favorite gardens is in Findhorn, Scotland.

What else is Maria Elena to Luther? Georgie speculates there is more, while Josefina sticks to her story that Luther and her mom have always been best friends. Georgie resolves to keep an eye on things, just in case.

Meanwhile, through Luther we see Maria Elena as a long time friend, helpmate, and teacher in her own right. We also come to understand his deep respect for her abilities, including wisdom, intelligence and intuition, and her beauty.

Author’s note: Check out Maria Elena’s namesake, the song Maria Elena (Spanish words and music by Lorenzo Barcelata, English lyrics by Bob Russell) and its beautiful instrumental version by Los Indios Tabajaras.

Georgie, Josefina and Shaw

Georgie, Josefina & Shawn – BFFs

Georgie Josefina and ShawGeorgie Jones meets her new BFFs Josefina and Shawn on the school bus. It is her first day as a freshman at Mystic Creek High School. Josefina somehow knows who Georgie is, and offers to show her around school. The two girls and Shawn end up having all their classes together. Georgie quickly learns Josefina is as smart as she is pretty. Shawn, also smart, is a geek who’s always on his cell phone.

Josefina says her mom, Maria Elena, works with Luther, the lighthouse keeper at Andersen Light: A Mystic Creek Novel. Georgie has never been to the lighthouse, but remembers him as a friend of Grandpa and Grandma Jones.

She had been nervous, but Georgie’s two new friends smooth out the day. Two thumbs up.

Popping Up Like a Prairie Dog

Popping Up Like a Prairie Dog

Hey, everybody!  I am popping up like a prairie dog from a mountain of paperwork to check in.

My prairie dog is a little like Tron racing through a changing digital labyrinth. I leave my self breadcrumbs in real life and digitally while I shape and reshape the worlds of fiction with Andersen Light: A Mystic Creek Novel [working title]. My editor at kn literary arts has me hopping to create the best novel and book proposal I can. (Thanks, Rebecca!)

On occasion I pop up to say hi or head to the grocery store. More likely, I text Mom a good morning and jump back into it with my first cup of Darjeeling.

Popping Up Like a Prairie Dog! New Young Adult Fiction Author Tanya D. Dawson checking in again

While I’m here I want to say thanks to everyone for your support, especially my super spouse (I noticed the absence of blonde dog hair clouds wafting next to the hallway baseboards. You’re the best!), my neglected friends and family, and team players from The Hett Agency, and Sullivan Design, LLC.

Lessons Learning—Treading into the Somehow Process

Lessons Learning—Treading into the Somehow Process

First time writers who know diddly about the book process, like me, receive a powerful shock-a-rooni jolt of reality. Like, we believe we’ll write the book and somehow, as if by magic, it will get “out there”.

I still believe that—my grip on faith for courage is my creative life line—but there’s more to the somehow. Now that I am treading into the somehow I can tell you it is more hard work than magic, takes loads of research and question asking, posting stuff on social media, and a bunch of other things I won’t put you through here.

My current somehow continues to be the book proposal. I am writing the chapter abstracts now, chapter 17 out of 36. Next week I hope to report I have completed the chapter abstract section and am sailing through another.

I suspect we’re supposed to complain about this so people know we’re really working and not lying on the couch watching Acorn TV and eating chips and salsa. The truth is, even though I’m not certain of what I’m doing and wonder if the ice here is too thin, this work is worth getting Andersen Light: A Mystic Creek Novel, Georgie, Luther and the rest of the gang “out there” for you to meet. I love my work.

Fictional Andersen Light, Part One

Fictional Andersen Light: A Mystic Creek Novel, Part One

Not the Real Fictional AL

Andersen Light: A Mystic Creek Novel is the fictitious lighthouse near the fictional town of Mystic Creek. It’s been in the Andersen family since its inception—before the Light House Establishment or its successor, the Lighthouse Service. Andersen lightkeeping goes way back to the old country, the Northern Lighthouse Board and Robert Stevenson companies, if the Andersens were real people.

Generations of our Andersens have renovated Andersen Light: A Mystic Creek Novel to make it what it is today, an extra-wide and tall lighthouse, with each level a pleasantly functional space.

Light shines through the Fresnel lens many miles into the distance at night while natural light floods into substantial vertical hurricane windows in daytime. A nighttime view of Andersen Light: A Mystic Creek Novel reveals the tower’s rotating light reaching out into the world and Luther’s reading lamps from his rooms on level two or his office/library/classroom located on level four, the gallery.

Balconies surround the upper levels, including, of course, the gallery which also has a half-moon shaped kitchenette built around one side of the spiral staircase.

A new remodeling begins on the second and third levels toward the end of Andersen Light: A Mystic Creek Novel, the novel.

Meet Katie, Canine Coworker & Officemate

Katie

Katie

Katie, a perpetually shedding, half Beagle/half Shiba Inu, is my friend, canine coworker and officemate.

She follows me from room to room and stations herself somewhere between the door and me, either to guard or keep me in place.

Early mornings we both assume the positions for meditation and yoga/stretching. However, Katie’s role is more supervisory.

At break time she leaves for solar therapy and can be found sunning herself either outdoors or indoors, depending on her druthers.

As a writer’s assistant, Katie-dog:

Katie Downward Dog

Katie Downward Dog

  • Is a good beta manuscript listener (but not too big on providing feedback).
  • Provides a welcome focal point for me to stare as I work out a sentence or plot issue.
  • Seeks affection just as I need to return to the moment from wherever my mind has wandered.
  • Keeps the love flowing and gratitude rolling in.

And they say a writer’s life is solitary!
